How to Unlock the Shady Merchant

The Deadly Days: Roadtrip shady merchant sells cursed gear, and you unlock him at the workbench before he starts appearing during your trips. His items introduce powerful effects with dangerous drawbacks, making each purchase a decision that can reshape your build. Unlock the vendor at base, then watch your route for opportunities to meet him.

His inventory includes unusual goods such as a bloody hand, a second-hand syringe, and a rotten heart. Purchases carry a cost beyond scrap currency, so read each offer’s effects before committing.

Backpack placement matters here, too. Weapons and gear occupy limited space, and many effects apply only to marked items. Before buying something, check both its drawback and whether its selector can reach the equipment you want to affect.

Where to Find Him in Version 1.0

Version 1.0, released October 29, 2026, makes encounters more predictable:

Deadly Days: Roadtrip — Where to Find Him in Version 1.0

  • At merchant stops: He has a 50% chance to wait behind the wagon.
  • From day 4: A one-day route is guaranteed to include him once per run.
  • Additional encounters: Random appearances can happen on top of that guarantee.

Check behind the wagon when you visit a merchant stop. The shady vendor can be easy to overlook if you only interact with the regular merchant.

During route selection, inspect locations marked with an “!”. These indicate stage events or modifiers, and hovering over them reveals what makes that destination different. The shady merchant is one of the possible events; the same symbol also covers other modifiers, so read the destination details before choosing.

Plan around the once-per-run guarantee when you want to explore his inventory. Keep the distinction clear: the 50% appearance chance applies to merchant stops, while the route guarantee begins from day 4.

Cursed Items and Their Trade-Offs

The 1.0 update adds three merchant items with very different consequences for combat and movement.

Deadly Days: Roadtrip — Cursed Items and Their Trade-Offs

ItemBenefitDrawback
Ripped-Out EyeMarked weapons get +100% crit chanceMarked weapons get -75% range
Ice CubeIncreases movement speed and dash distanceYou slide briefly after stopping or dashing
UraniumHits with marked weapons and throwables can trigger a small nukeCan mutate the hit zombie into a titan

Ripped-Out Eye: Check Your Weapon Range

Compare the range penalty with how you currently fight before marking a weapon. A substantial crit increase changes the damage calculation, but losing range also changes how close you need to get.

Version 1.0 allows critical chance above 100% to reach higher critical tiers. Each additional full 100% adds the crit-damage bonus again, while the remaining chance can roll another tier. Check the weapon tooltip’s crit chance and crit damage when evaluating the trade.

Ice Cube: Account for the Slide

Leave room around your intended stopping point. The extra movement speed and dash distance come with sliding after you stop or dash, so account for that continued movement when positioning near enemies.

Uranium: Prepare for the Titan Risk

Evaluate your ability to handle a titan before adding Uranium to your setup. Its nuclear effect comes with the possibility of mutating the target, so weigh that danger alongside the extra offensive potential.

Inspect which weapons and throwables the item marks before finalizing your backpack arrangement.

The Merchant’s Connection to the Vampire

The Vampire’s unlock hint points you toward a meeting with the shady merchant. Prioritize unlocking and finding the vendor if you want to pursue this survivor.

Deadly Days: Roadtrip — The Merchant’s Connection to the Vampire

Introduced in version 1.0, the Vampire starts without a weapon and fights with a group of bats. Another bat joins with each level-up. Their attacks deal melee damage and have a chance to steal life.

Pair the bats with items that apply melee effects when building around this character. That melee classification gives you a concrete direction for choosing support gear once the Vampire joins your roster.
