How to Unlock Bananaperson

The Deadly Days: Roadtrip banana unlock comes from a banana costume lying on the ground: pick it up to unlock Bananaperson. The payoff is Special Banana, a starting item that throws bouncing, explosive bananas and gives you something useful to build around immediately.

Keep the character and item names straight when planning your run. Bananaperson is the playable survivor; Special Banana is the throwable that supplies the character’s signature attack.

How Special Banana Works

Special Banana throws a banana at nearby enemies, bouncing and exploding three times. Its damage increases by 4 per character level, so leveling strengthens the item alongside any compatible support gear you arrange around it.

The banana attacks automatically, but it is also triggerable. That distinction opens up another way to increase its output: equip items that activate marked triggerable items rather than relying entirely on its automatic attacks.

Give the projectile nearby targets to bounce between. Against an isolated enemy, you won’t necessarily see the same chain of bounces you get when several zombies are within reach. Keep moving around the edge of a group instead of stepping into the horde to force more hits.

Build Around Dash Triggers and Throwable Range

Start by connecting Roller Skates to Special Banana. When the skates mark the banana, dashing triggers another banana attack, letting your movement contribute to clearing enemies.

Use these items to develop that setup:

  • Roller Skates: Mark Special Banana to trigger it when you dash. Check the marking direction whenever you rearrange your backpack.
  • Scope: Extends the range of marked weapons and thrown weapons. Mark the banana to address its short reach.
  • Rubber Band: Added in version 1.0, this increases the range of marked throwables and reduces their trigger intervals.

Check item descriptions before spending backpack space on a support piece. A bonus restricted to bullets serves a different purpose from one that explicitly affects thrown weapons. Build the banana’s support connections around the effects that actually apply to it.

Keep another weapon equipped as you assemble those connections. The banana setup can develop alongside melee or ranged gear; you don’t need to commit every backpack slot to throwables.

Cogwheel, another version 1.0 addition, connects multiple triggerable items. When one marked triggerable item activates, the other marked triggerable items activate too. Each item can trigger only once per chain. Mark Special Banana alongside other triggerable items to connect its attacks to that chain, and account for that limit when arranging the group.

Hand Mirror introduces another placement option: effects that hit a marked item are copied onto the marked item opposite it. Inspect both marked positions when fitting the mirror into a crowded backpack. Its opposite-item relationship adds another connection to manage alongside the directions of your existing support gear.

In co-op, version 1.0 allows selectors to mark items in the other player’s backpack. The backpack grids can touch, and each backpack has an extra unlockable column. Check across both bags when arranging support items; a selector’s target can sit in your partner’s inventory rather than your own.

Watch Food Interactions in Version 1.0

Version 1.0, released October 29, 2026, classifies Special Banana as Food. That matters when you equip Secret Sauce, which deactivates marked Food items.

Arrange Secret Sauce so its marking avoids Special Banana. Its poison effects and fuel benefits come with an inventory placement tradeoff, and marking your signature throwable can shut down the attack you built around.

Secret Sauce lowers the fuel required each day, makes the bus start faster, and adds poison damage to marked weapons and items. Keep its marking on equipment you want to receive that poison effect while protecting your banana. Coffee, Fresh Pumpkin, and The Carver's Grin also count as Food in version 1.0, so inspect those connections too if they share your backpack.

Recheck those connections after moving equipment. Keep Roller Skates marking the banana, place throwable bonuses where they apply, and keep Secret Sauce’s Food deactivation away from it.
