How to Unlock The Carver
The Deadly Days: Roadtrip pumpkin unlock gets you The Carver, a survivor who starts with a knife and a pumpkin turret item. Find a Fresh Pumpkin in the meadow biome, place it beside a knife in your backpack, and defeat the next boss. Keep the pumpkin out of your stash—it rots and disappears there.
Follow these steps during your run:
- Choose the meadow stage with crop fields and a windmill on its route icon. Plan your path toward that stage when selecting stops.
- Find and loot the Pumpkin Patch. Look for a question mark on the minimap to locate it.
- Put the Fresh Pumpkin in your active backpack beside a knife. Arrange both before continuing toward the boss.
- Defeat the next boss with that setup. Afterward, check the survivor selection for The Carver.
You can complete this while using another survivor. The unlock run does not need to be melee-only; the pumpkin and knife arrangement is the part to prepare.

Where to Find the Pumpkin Patch
Identify the correct stage by its route artwork, rather than its name. You want crop fields in the foreground and a windmill in the background, within the meadow biome.

Stage names are randomized. A stop with “Fields” in its name can still be the wrong map type, so check the picture before committing to a route. Once inside the appropriate stage, follow the minimap’s question mark to the Pumpkin Patch and loot it for the Fresh Pumpkin.
Before leaving, make room for the pumpkin in your backpack. Picking it up is only the start of the unlock; you still need to carry it forward alongside the knife.
Prevent the Pumpkin From Disappearing
The distinction between your backpack and stash matters here. The Fresh Pumpkin’s description warns that it will rot and disappear if left in the stash. Move it into the active backpack before progressing to another stop, including a shop.

Check its placement again after reorganizing your build. Moving weapons around to fit another backpack or damage item can separate the knife from the pumpkin, so finish your inventory adjustments with those two beside each other.
There is also an Early Access timing quirk: the pumpkin could transform into the turret item upon entering the boss map, before the fight ended. If you encounter that behavior, continue through the boss fight and check The Carver afterward. Set up the adjacency before entering the boss area instead of waiting until the battle begins.
The Carver’s Starting Gear and Pumpkin Turrets
The Carver starts with a knife and The Carver's Grin. That second item supplies the pumpkin turrets, giving you something different to build around than another conventional firearm.

Its described effects are:
- Every 1.5 seconds, it throws a pumpkin turret that immediately fires a seed dealing 66 damage.
- Spawned turrets fire again every 1.5 seconds and when triggered.
- Each turret lasts 5 seconds.
- Turrets benefit from most item effects that apply to ranged weapons.
Build around those ranged weapon interactions when arranging your backpack. Read each support item's targeting effect and position it to affect The Carver's Grin where applicable.
Version 1.0 corrected pumpkin turret lifetime stickers to display percentages instead of seconds. Character stickers from the same source also combine when an item is upgraded, up to the sticker’s maximum rank.
Version 1.0 also classifies both Fresh Pumpkin and The Carver's Grin as Food. Keep that classification in mind around Secret Sauce, which deactivates marked food items. Arrange its marked area carefully so it does not switch off the turret item you are building around.
